DocSend Alternative for Tracing Leaked Documents

Short answer: DocSend and Markedfile solve different problems. DocSend controls who can open a document and shows you how they read it. Markedfile hides a different invisible mark in each recipient's copy so that, if a copy leaks (even as a screenshot), you can tell which recipient it came from. If your goal is to find out who leaked a document, Markedfile is the closer fit. If your goal is analytics, access control or a data room, DocSend is built for that, and you can use both.

What DocSend is good at

DocSend is a document sharing platform. You upload a file, send a link, and get a view of who opened it, how long they spent on each page and whether they forwarded it. According to DocSend's pricing page, its higher plans add data rooms, email verification for visitors, NDAs and dynamic watermarking. It is a strong choice for fundraising decks, sales documents and due diligence.

Where leak tracing is different

Access control and analytics tell you what happened inside the link. A leak usually happens outside it.

  • Someone takes a screenshot or photographs the screen, and the file leaves the viewer.
  • A visible watermark (for example the viewer's email across the page) can be cropped, covered or edited out of the image.
  • If the same file went to many people through different channels, the file itself carries no way to tell the copies apart.

Markedfile marks the file itself. Each recipient gets their own copy with a different invisible identifier, and you can send it by any channel: email, a messaging app, Drive or a data room. When a copy shows up where it should not, you upload it to Detect and Markedfile reports which copy it matches. It is designed to survive screenshots, recompression, crops and rotation, but detection is heuristic, so there is no 100% guarantee.

How to use them together

  1. Mark first. Upload the PDF to Markedfile and create one copy per recipient, labelled with a name you will recognise.
  2. Share as usual. Upload each marked copy to DocSend (or a data room, or send it by email) and keep your access controls and analytics.
  3. If it leaks, upload what you found, a PDF, an image of a page or a screenshot, to Detect.
  4. Read the result. Markedfile tells you which recipient's copy it matches. What you do next is your decision.

What Markedfile cannot do

  • It does not trace copies you sent before you used it, because those were never marked.
  • It does not prevent a leak and it is not a data room. It has no view analytics, NDAs or access revocation.
  • It cannot promise identification of a heavily edited or very small fragment.

Files are processed in memory and are not stored.

FAQ

Is Markedfile a replacement for DocSend? Only if what you need from DocSend is leak tracing. For engagement analytics and data rooms, keep DocSend and add Markedfile as a step before you share.

Does DocSend already watermark documents? Its higher plans offer dynamic watermarking, which is visible on the page. A visible mark can be cropped out of a screenshot, while Markedfile's mark is invisible and different for each recipient.

Can I use Markedfile with a data room? Yes. Mark one copy per recipient, then upload each copy to the data room.

What does it cost? Free covers 5 active files with detection for 6 months. Enterprise is $49.99/month for one shared workspace. Compare with the plan you would need at DocSend.

What if the document already leaked? Markedfile cannot trace it, since that copy was never marked. Use it the next time you share.
