Business use

Which copy of the file got out?
Trace the document.

For companies that share contracts, financials, decks, board materials, and pre-release designs with employees, other companies, contractors, or investors. Markedfile is forensic watermarking and document tracking: an invisible watermark on each copy, with leak detection and leak tracing if the file becomes public. That is content protection and data leak prevention for documents that were supposed to stay private. File contents are not stored.

Collaboration needs Business or Enterprise

Starter and Pro stay on your Personal Workspace. A shared workspace uses Business or Enterprise. Invitations and new marks there need one of those plans. Business and Enterprise also mark video up to 10 minutes and 100 MB, downloaded as MP4. Free, Starter, and Pro do not include video.

How forensic watermarking works here

01

Mark a copy

Upload an image, PDF, or other supported file and assign a private identifier. Download the marked copy. That is the file you share.

02

Keep the record

The account stores the identifier, not the file. You can see each active mark and delete a record when you want the slot back.

03

Check a suspected copy

Upload a copy or a screenshot. Leak detection looks for a surviving mark. Recovery is best effort and depends on the file and what happened to it.

File contents are not stored

Bytes are processed in memory and are not written to disk. The account keeps the identifier, the file name and type, status, and timestamps, plus a detection token while the file is active.

Pricing

Prices are in USD. Annual billing is 10 times the monthly price, which is 2 months free. An active file is one whose mark can still be detected. This is a cap on active files, not a monthly upload quota.

Questions

What is an invisible forensic watermark?

An invisible forensic watermark is a mark embedded in a file so it is not meant to be noticed in ordinary viewing. You assign a private identifier — a person, a company, a deal, or a recipient — and Markedfile embeds that mark in a copy you can share. The mark is not the product name. If that copy later turns up, detection looks for the mark that belongs to the identifier.

What does Markedfile store?

File contents are processed in memory and are not stored. Your account keeps the metadata needed to detect a mark later: the identifier you assigned, the file name and type, the status, and timestamps. A file stays detectable while it is active. Deleting the record ends detection and frees the slot. Letting a Free file expire also removes the token. Passwords are stored as hashes.

What is included in Free, and when does a file expire?

Free is the Personal Workspace plan. It includes 5 active files. Each stays detectable for 6 calendar months from the time you mark it, clamped to the end of shorter months. Deleting the record ends detection and frees a slot immediately. This is a cap on active files, not a monthly upload quota.

How do personal plans differ from a business workspace?

Starter and Pro are for one person. A shared workspace uses Business or Enterprise. Invitations and new marks there need one of those plans, and each workspace is billed on its own.

Will every screenshot or edited copy be identified?

No. Recovery is best effort, and the confidence score is a heuristic. Confidence is about 99% for the exact file or when the HMAC metadata mark agrees with another mark, 95% from that metadata mark alone, and about 81% for a strong visual match such as a re-saved JPEG or a screenshot. A visual-only score stays under 90%. Images smaller than 96×96 pixels are not accepted. A crop of about 256 px of a detailed photo or diagram is an approximate minimum, not a ceiling. A PDF screenshot is best effort and is not guaranteed: the top half of a text page with margins, about 200 points square on a ticket, about 320 points square on a slide, or about 160 points square on a photograph. Images can often survive a crop, a resize, or recompression, but a heavily edited copy may not resolve. Marks in text files and ZIP-based packages, including Office files, are fragile. Markedfile does not promise that every leaked copy can be traced.

Which files can be marked?

PNG, JPEG, and WebP images; PDFs, including detection from the rendered page rather than metadata alone; text files and ZIP-based packages, including Office files; and other binary files, which come back inside a marked ZIP. An active Business or Enterprise workspace can also mark and detect MP4, MOV, WebM, and MKV video. The download is MP4. A screenshot of one frame is detected as an image. Free, Starter, and Pro do not include video. Every supported file also gets an HMAC metadata mark for that workspace. The workspace plan sets the limit: Free allows 5 MB per file and PDFs up to 10 pages, Starter 10 MB and 50 pages, Pro 20 MB and 100 pages, and Business or Enterprise 100 MB and 500 pages, plus video up to 10 minutes and 100 MB.
